Tips on Publishing Your eBook

Writing may be your talent and you are excited to bring your message to the world, but publishing your ebook may be a whole different animal! Here are some basic tips for how to do it quickly and easily. Some of the tips are quite simple, but often times it is precisely the simple things that we overlook.

Get Feedback on Your Ebook

First, as with anything, you need a good product. The product in this case is your ebook. You have two best friends in this area. You need someone that is willing to give you totally honest feedback about your ebook and you need to have thick skin. While it may stroke your ego to hear someone say “wow, I love it,” that does nothing to improve your product. You need to have someone who is willing to give you real and honest constructive criticism.

Putting aside the claim that “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” the fact is that many people do. Keep in mind that in addition to an eye-catching and well designed cover, your ebook cover should stand out as a thumbnail. That means it needs to look good small.

Pricing is Important to Exposing Your Ebook to the Market

The price of your ebook should be low – $5.99 or less. According to studies it’s best to keep it between $2.99 and $5.99. The jury is still out on whether to make it cheaper, but 99 cents will certainly get more downloads. The question is whether it will make you any money. If you want to get a lot of downloads, making it free is guaranteed to do that.

Don’t forget that distributors take a cut. Amazon, for example, gives 70 percent royalty for authors but only for Kindle books priced between $2.99 and $9.99.  The rate goes down to 35 percent otherwise. You should not use distributors who will not let you set your own price.

Market Your Ebook Carefully

Marketing is more difficult. The main rule here is that people need to know about your ebook if you are going to sell it. That means you need to use social media, blogging and every tool you know of to create awareness. Don’t forget to have flyers at appropriate places, for example your business or speaking engagements you may have. Business cards, of course, are a must.

Following this basic advice will help you get your ebook off the ground. Keep it simple but stay motivated and it will work wonders for your sales.
